When bacteria in your mouth form a sticky film called plaque and it is not removed through brushing and flossing, it hardens into tartar. In some patients, plaque and tartar build up more quickly and easily. When this is not removed, an infection called gingivitis or gum disease results. At this stage, the disease process can be reversed by treatments our dentist and team provide. If untreated, however, this can lead to periodontitis, which destroys the gum attachment and supporting bone and is not reversible. Pain, gum recession, bone loss and tooth loss are risks of gum disease. To learn more about preventing and treating gum disease in Dallas, Texas, contact the office of Dr. Cye Jekel at 972-239-3550.
